I’m so glad to meet you, yet I’m so sorry for why we need to meet because no one wants to be a part of this club and yet you need to be a part of a club that will offer you the support you need. Research has shown that those who feel supported on their family-building journey have a more positive and successful experience. You are worthy of love, empathy and support that you need and deserve.
“Support” is an umbrella term and can take form through books, support groups, informational seminars, online courses and professional counseling. Peer-led support groups through RESOLVE, The National Infertility Association are free and invaluable. But what are the benefits?
Talking with others who can relate to your experiences is validating and honors your truth.
Every family-building journey is unique in protocols, testing, and treatment methods. Hearing others’ stories will educate you and may prompt you to generate a list of new questions to ask your doctor.
From organizing your appointments to storing your medications to surviving the two week wait, your support people will have suggestions on what worked/what didn’t for them and may spark something for you in how to better navigate and cope with your journey.
The beauty of being part of a support group is that everyone’s story helps someone else; yours will too.
Support groups are there for you in a way that suits you. You can tell all or just listen (especially in the beginning). It is what you make of it and will be what you want it to be. You are always in control.
