I’m not a practitioner of Chinese medicine, but I have learned about how the phases of the menstrual cycle have deep meaning in Chinese medicine. We think of the cycle as this amazing tool for what is going on inside the body because it truly tells us so much. We can also think about the menstrual cycle as a beautiful rhythm in which to live by. What would it look like if you were living with the rhythm of your cycle? (If you are not menstruating regularly, follow the moon cycle.)

Menstrual Phase/New Moon Days 1-5 is a time for rest and reflection. It is a good time to see what went well and what sort of things you need to let go of that are not serving your highest good. Gentle movement is good now especially if you have any stagnation or pain during menses.

Follicular phase/Waxing Moon is a time for nourishing blood. You might consider doing most of your planning and brainstorming during this phase as it is a time for new beginnings.

Ovulatory Phase/Full Moon is the time for the surge and when you can put your best foot forward, shining your light to the world. As the moon is bright, you should feel your best. This is a good time to put on your best outfit and connect with your favorite people.

Luteal Phase/Waning Moon is the time to move blood and is often when women will get the most PMS symptoms. Oftentimes women will simultaneously feel super productive. This is the time to finish what you started, tie up any loose ends and prepare for rest.

You can follow this cyclical way of living. Isn’t it amazing to think about the simple rhythm and ritual we have naturally occurring within our own body? Embrace the flow, live according to your cycle for the next month and notice how you feel.
